Ogies — Blue Mining workers and local residents staged a protest outside the Ogies Police Station on Monday, 20 October 2025, demanding justice for Lawrence Vusi Motsepe, who remains in critical condition following an underground attack.

This came after reports that suspect Sibiya Meli, accused of assault and attempted murder, was applying for bail. Meli allegedly attacked Motsepe with a roof bolter, a heavy machine used for securing roofs in underground mines during a shift-related dispute several weeks ago. After the assault, Meli allegedly fled the province and was later arrested in KwaZulu-Natal.

The incident has left Motsepe, described by colleagues as a dedicated and well-liked worker, fighting for his life in hospital after spending nearly two months in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). According to family members, he has undergone multiple surgeries and remains in a fragile state.

“We want justice not bail,” said Thato Mpapa, the victim’s niece. “We are here because Lawrence is still fighting for his life. How can they even think about granting bail to someone who tried to kill him? My uncle cannot even do anything yet, and we are still visiting him every day at the hospital. The police must not allow this man to walk free while my uncle lies helpless.”

The protest remained peaceful, but emotions ran high. Many participants carried posters reading ‘No bail for attempted murder’ and ‘Justice for Lawrence.’ Others chanted shouted slogans demanding accountability from both law enforcement and the mine’s management.

Blue Mining representatives were present at the protest, showing support for the family and workers.

Family members have called for greater transparency about the circumstances of the attack. “We just want to know why this happened and whether the mine is taking proper steps to prevent such incidents from happening again,” Mpapa said.

A mine worker, Mandla Maselesele shared his frustration. “We work in dangerous conditions every day. The last thing we expect is to be attacked by one of our own.”

Sergeant Ziqubu from Ogies Police confirmed that the suspect, Meli, is currently in custody and will remain detained until his next court appearance on 03 November 2025. “The suspect was apprehended in KwaZulu-Natal and has since been transferred to our jurisdiction,” said Ziqubu. “He faces charges of attempted murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The court will decide on the issue of bail, but we have submitted strong opposition based on the severity of the incident.”

Blue Mining stated it condemns workplace violence and is cooperating with authorities and reviewing internal safety and conflict prevention protocols. The company said its priority is Motsepe’s recovery and employee safety.
